DC-10 aircraft makes 'historic' final flight from Birmingham

Biman Bangladesh Airlines DC-10 lands. The aircraft will be flown back to Bangladesh and sold off, Birmingham Airport said

The final commercial passenger flight of a DC-10 aeroplane has been made from Birmingham Airport in front of enthusiasts from across the world.

The three-engined aircraft made its first appearance in Birmingham in a demonstration flight in 1972.

The last plane's operator, Biman Bangladesh Airlines, will now switch to using a Boeing 777.

About 1,000 fans bought tickets for one-hour pleasure flights run by the company to mark the aircraft's passing.

On Thursday, a group flew on the plane's final international journey from Dhaka to Birmingham Biman originally said the plane's final resting place would be Bruntingthorpe Aviation Museum in Lutterworth, Leicestershire, but the firm has since decided to return it to Bangladesh to be scrapped.

Graham Dinsdale has been running a merchandise stall for aviation enthusiasts at Birmingham Airport since Saturday. He said 1,000 people had bought models of the DC-10 and commemorative T-shirts.

"One customer from Singapore bought one of everything - it took me about half an hour to serve him," he said.

Bernie Leighton is managing correspondent of airlinereporter.com and travelled from the US to be on the last flight. He was also on board the DC-10's final international voyage from Dhaka on Thursday. "It's always sad to say goodbye to another aircraft type. The skies are getting less diverse," he said. "When the plane lands I'll be happy I was on it but also sad; there's really nothing like it left now."

Chris Sloan, founder and editor-in-chief of flight website Airchive, travelled from Miami to be on the flight. "I've been on a lot of first flights but I've never been on the last flight of an aircraft before," he said.

Day 3 of Biman Bangladesh DC 10 S2-ACR Final Scenic Flight 24-02-14
McDonnell Douglas DC-10 Biman Bangladesh Airlines | Last Ever Passenger Flight!
This is a little bit different to my other flight videos...
On Monday 24th February 2014, a day that will go down in aviation history, S2-ACR "New Era" by Biman Bangladesh Airlines operated the last ever DC-10 passenger flight in the world! It was an enthuiast flight, doing a 1 hour scenic tour over northern Britain. & I was fortunate enough to be onboard that flight.

We were called to board at Gate 65, where we were greeted with cake & champagne by the Managing Director of Biman Airlines who then done a speech (which is included in the video!). He confirms that this is definitly the LAST EVER DC-10 passenger flight anywhere in the world. He continued to explain why they chose Birmingham as the host of the DC-10 retirement. Because as of Summer 2014 Biman will fly their new 777-300ER aircraft from Dhaka to Birmingham and onwards to New York, so they felt Birmingham was a nice way of introducing the airline to the city. Kevin the MD then joined the press & the passengers as we went out to join the aircraft!

Before boarding, a security perimeter had been set up around the aircraft and we were allowed to walk around the aircraft and take some pictures :) Some of my walk around footage is also featured in this video.

Then we finally boarded the flight which was full of press and aviation enthusiasts and took to the skies for the last time. Departing BHX's RWY15 and turning round to head northbound and climb to 26,000ft. Once airborne they did announce the flight deck doors would be open to allow us to go and have a look, however with everyone trying to get to the front they soon closed it again and waiting until we had landed again.
After just over an hour in the air we returned to Birmingham (where we had definitly attracted the attention of plenty of people) and we were then greeted by a water canon arch salute from the fire department.

A quick look in the flight deck and I was among the last 25 passengers to ever step foot off of a DC-10 ever again. A great flight, fantastic sound and very nice crew all happy to give the aircraft a warm send off.

However there were some very ignorant, stupid people (passengers I mean) on the aircraft aswell. Such as the man behind me. Who spent most of the taxi on the way out on his phone! And no sooner had the aircraft touched down (before we had vacated the runway!) you can hear him on his phone again! Because he was on his phone, he failed to hear them announce we were getting the water canon salute so you can hear his confusion at the fire engines and hear him say "It's Raining..." -_- You can hear me & others laugh at his ignorance. Very stupid, rude man!
BUT other than him everyone was in good spirits and it was a great send off to such an iconic trijet!

If you want to see her in her final hours get down to Sheldon County Park at the end of Runway 15 (Marston Green Train Station) this Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Biman DC-10 Final Take Off from Dhaka, Bangladesh - Window View
On Friday 20th February 2014, the last passenger-carrying McDonnell Douglas DC-10 aircraft in the world operated its final commercial flight.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines indulged many aviation enthusiasts by organising not only a series of nine pleasure flights from Birmingham Airport (BHX) in the UK on 22-24 February, but by also offering the Dhaka to Birmingham flight for commercial sale for the most die-hard aviation enthusiasts among us.

The flight was operated as flight BG1015 from Dhaka via Kuwait to Birmingham. Each sector was around 6.5 hours flight time, giving plenty of time for us to absorb the atmosphere and enjoy talking with the crew and fellow enthusiasts.

The aircraft was S2-ACR 'New Era', the second last DC-10 off the production line in 1988, and the only DC-10 to be delivered brand new to Biman Bangladesh Airlines.

This was without doubt one of the most memorable flights of my life, even having flown several Biman DC-10 sectors in the past. A huge and heartfelt THANK YOU to Biman Bangladesh Airlines for making this happen!

Landing gear banged to its limits
What happens when 120 tonnes of landing Boeing 767 encounters severe turbulence just above the runway (15 at BHX).

The flexing wings are a good indication of the blustery conditions - crosswind gusting 35 knots perpendicular to runway.

Just watch the wheels bouncing in all directions under the shear forces. Very reassuring that the undercarriage can take this sort of punishment without blowing itself to pieces.
