Birmingham is an historic city and there are plenty of sites and places of interest that shouldn’t be missed by visitors. The sheer variety of interests and attractions in Birmingham means that there is sure to be something to suit everyone’s particular tastes.

The Artifex is a gallery that showcases some of the best pieces in contemporary art, glass and jewellery, as well as metal work and ceramics. The articles are chosen for the high quality of work and the innovative nature of the objects. Something that often confuses the visitor is that Birmingham is very widespread so not all attractions are in or even close to the city centre.

If you like visiting stately homes then there are a good number to pique your interest; Aston Hall is one of the great country homes of England and was built in 1680 by Sir Thomas Hoitte. Blakesly Hall is a great example of the Tudor and early Stuart country homes. Built in 1590 for a Birmingham gentleman farmer, the house reflects the lifestyle of wealthy families during the late sixteenth and very early seventeenth centuries. The building of Hadley Hall was commissioned by George, first lord of Lyttleton in 1756. This house is probably the last built example of the English Palladian mansion, with its rococo decorations and perfect proportions.
You may be more interested in learning about the every day life of ordinary Birmingham folk in days gone by, than by how the aristocracy lived. If you have an interest in the people of the Black Country then a visit to the Black Country Museum and reconstructed village is a must. The museum was first established in 1976 and has some perfect examples of late Victorian and early twentieth century village life.

An increasing number of people have an abiding interest in Britain’s canals, and Birchill’s Canal Museum is largely about life on the Walsall canals, its well worth seeing, even if you’re not into longboats and canals. Nobody should leave Birmingham without a visit to the famous National Exhibition Centre or NEC. Now more than a quarter of a century old, the NEC is still the largest exhibition centre in Europe. If you are interested in the art of the pre-Raphaelite painters then you should visit the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery as it houses the largest collection of pre-Raphaelite art in the world.

If you’ve had enough culture for a while then the West Midlands Safari Park is a Birmingham attraction that everyone can enjoy and it makes for a great family day out. Chocolate lovers should make a beeline for Cadbury World, which is a purpose built visitor centre dedicated to the art of the chocolateer and the only such example in the whole of the UK.

This article has given a brief overview of just some of the Birmingham attractions that visitors might enjoy. There are plenty more sights and scenes that may attract visitors to England’s second city. Birmingham is a vibrant city and there are enough attractions to suit everyone’s taste.
21st November 2016

RBH has created a new communications campaign to bring Birmingham Airport front of mind in the global aviation and tourism markets. The campaign positions the airport as central to its clients’ business needs.

Building on the airport’s existing Hello World brand proposition, the Centre of Your World campaign launched in September at the World Routes Global Forum 2016, hosted in Sichuan Province, China. The forum itself brought together over 3,000 delegates, 300 airlines, 700 airports and 130 tourist authorities.

Core to the campaign is a brand film showcasing the airport and its facilities, as well as the wider West Midlands region and its future potential. The film was created using footage overlaid with infographic animations to communicate the breadth of information in an impactful manner, and resonate with a global audience.

In addition to the brand film, the Centre of Your World campaign made use of a number of channels to maximise engagement for the event, including trade press, brochures, online advertising, exhibition panels, DM and delegate promotions (in both English and Mandarin).

Justine Howl, Head of Communications for Birmingham Airport said,
“We’re delighted by the response at World Routes to our Centre of Your World campaign. It had real stand-out among the many international airports exhibiting at the event. The new brand film, in particular, helped to deliver several key messages while driving Birmingham Airport’s central role in bringing business and tourism into the city, globally as well as domestically.”Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06138600831355961940noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7570642064918185122.post-44192359350902432392017-06-03T15:18:00.000+01:002017-06-03T16:02:39.883+01:00Cardiff 2017 UEFA Champions League Final Charters
Thousands of fans have arrived in Cardiff for the Champions League final. Up to 170,000 people have traveled to the city for the world's biggest sporting match of 2017, with many arriving on Saturday morning to watch Juventus F.C take on holders Real Madrid for the UEFA Champions League match. Cardiff Airport was unable to accommodate any of the heavy charters, so Birmingham Airport stepped in to take on the extra traffic.

The Midlands’ geographical location at the centre of the UK gives it an inherent advantage in ensuring it is well connected to the wider UK economy. 92% of the UK’s population can reach the Midlands in less than four hours.13 45% of British rail freight
goes through the Midlands.

Transport bosses in the Midlands are considering proposals to build a terminal building linking the HS2 station to Birmingham Airport.
The HS2 Interchange station will be located approximately 1.2 miles away from the airport and, if plans go through, could include a mover system to transport passengers to get their flight.

This could open up the doors of international travel for HS2 customers, as passengers in London may be tempted to go to Birmingham to catch their flight, as it will only take around 38 minutes to get to the Midlands Engine on the high-speed service when it is planned to open in 2026.

Midlands Connect is a pan-Midlands partnership of 23 Local Authorities, nine Local Enterprise Partnerships, the Chambers of Commerce, Highways England, HS2 Ltd, Network Rail, Birmingham Airport and our Sponsor the Department for Transport. It aims to deliver the enhanced connectivity required to power the Midlands Engine, maximising the Midlands’ position as a hub of the national transport network; driving economic growth, trade and productivity.
Emirates SkyCargo operates freighter to transport exclusive Jaguar Land Rover cars from Birmingham Airport
18th May 2017
Emirates SkyCargo, the freight division of Emirates, has operated its freighter aircraft from Birmingham Airport as part of a new bespoke service for the transportation of exclusive Jaguar Land Rover cars to Chicago.

Emirates SkyCargo flight EK9923 departed Birmingham Airport on its way to Chicago O'Hare International in the United States of America, to deliver cars for further testing. Metro Shipping, the logistics service provider appointed by Jaguar Land Rover, partner to Emirates and strategic partner of Birmingham Airport was on hand to coordinate the logistics of the exciting shipment.

The freighter service is part of Emirates SkyCargo’s specialised offering, Emirates SkyWheels - air transportation solutions for high value automobiles. The service offers the safe transportation of luxury, premium vehicles. Airfreighting the cars directly from Birmingham, the location of Jaguar Land Rover’s Solihull facility, to Chicago, also results in reduced handling of cars as there will no longer be a requirement for long-distance trucking of the vehicles.

The Jaguar Land Rover cars were uplifted by an Emirates SkyCargo Boeing 777 Freighter aircraft which has the capacity to carry over 100 tonnes of cargo. Large and outsized shipments can also be easily uplifted through the aircraft’s wide main deck cargo doors. The aircraft is one of the most modern, technologically advanced freighters available, and has the lowest fuel burn of any comparable sized aircraft.

Hiran Perera, Senior Vice President, Cargo Planning and Freighters, Emirates SkyCargo, said: “We have seen huge demand from customers across the globe for bespoke transportation solutions for various business verticals, which is why we’ve launched a number of sector-specific products as part of our offerings, such as Emirates SkyPharma, Emirates SkyWheels and more recently Emirates SkyFresh.

“It is a positive development that we are able to work with leading car manufacturers like Jaguar Land Rover on our Emirates SkyWheels offering. As a global facilitator of trade with a network spanning 155 destinations across six continents, we look forward to working with businesses across the Midlands and the UK to help them connect with their international counterparts.”

Paul Kehoe, Chief Executive Officer, Birmingham Airports said: "The Midlands is at the heart of UK manufacturing and the top export region outside of London and the South East, accounting for almost 20 percent of all English export goods.

"Air connectivity is an absolutely vital ingredient in growing this success and supporting global manufacturing brands such as Jaguar Land Rover, which produces thousands of vehicles each week from the Solihull plant, near the airport site. It therefore makes absolute sense to see more exporters using Birmingham Airport as a gateway to the world and I encourage business leaders in the region to support this opportunity to even further enhance the success of Midlands Engine."

Lawrence Boyle, Global Test Facilities Team Leader, Jaguar Land Rover said: "This is another milestone for Jaguar Land Rover as it continues to improve productivity, saving significant time and cost in the movement of our vehicles. By working with Emirates SkyCargo and using Birmingham Airport, we have a hub much closer to the centre of our engineering and manufacturing operations, enabling us to transport our premium products more quickly and efficiently. We are proud to have played a role in making this happen and supporting sustainable, profitable growth."

Tom Fernihough, Automotive Director, Metro Shipping said: ‘’Metro is delighted to realise its vision of achieving global supply chain solutions through local strategic partnerships creating a truly unique, bespoke and scalable platform, with the support of Emirates SkyCargo, Jaguar Land Rover and Birmingham Airport. We have drawn on our relationships and over 35 years of experience within the automotive logistics sector to deliver benefit to all parties involved, which we will also be offering to other shippers in the region.”

In December 2016, Emirates SkyCargo carried nearly 5,700 tonnes of cargo from the UK, up 29% on the same period last year*. This was the first month that Emirates SkyCargo exported a larger volume of cargo from the UK than any other airline. The total cargo volume flown by the UK arm of Emirates SkyCargo between January 2014 and December 2016 was nearly 190,000 tonnes.
From 31st May 2016 Turkish Airlines will increase its services between Birmingham and Istanbul from 13 flights a week to double daily, offering more than 300 extra seats a week from the Midlands.

Double daily flights give passengers greater choice and flexibility, which is particularly beneficial for business travellers. It also means that customers have greater access to Turkish Airlines’ extensive route network from Istanbul to 283 destinations around the world.

The airline has a successful story to tell. Starting with five services to Istanbul in December 2008, Turkish Airlines soon realised the strong demand in the Birmingham region and increased the number of flights in January 2012 to seven weekly departures. Later that year it increased to ten departures per week and in December 2014 the Airport welcomed news that the programme would grow to 12 weekly flights.

Selim Ozturk, General Manager for Birmingham, Turkish Airlines, said, “Birmingham Airport is a hugely successful base for us and we have grown significantly over the past eight years. The double daily flights gives passengers even more choice and with 283 onward destinations via Istanbul throughout the Middle East, the Far East and Africa, Birmingham Airport really is the gateway to the world with our award winning airline.”

Paul Kehoe, Chief Executive, Birmingham Airport, added, “Turkish Airlines is a fantastic carrier and partner to have here at Birmingham Airport. Starting eight years ago the service has gone from strength to strength carrying hundreds of thousands of passengers. The Turkish Airlines in-flight product is award winning and extremely popular – which is demonstrated by more and more people choosing to experience the service, reliability and affordability it offers.

“I congratulate the Turkish Airlines team on doing a great job here in the region and increasing passenger numbers year-on-year, and for further committing to Birmingham Airport.”
Visitors Receive Warm Regional Welcome Into Shakespeare's Airport
8th March 2016

A warm Shakespeare welcome will be given to passengers arriving at Birmingham Airport, following the unveiling of a new installation to greet the millions of visitors arriving into the region through ‘Shakespeare’s Airport’ each year.

In partnership with destination management organisation, Shakespeare’s England, the new artwork is located in the arrivals pier of the terminal building.

It gives visitors a taste of what the region can offer, showcasing the range of wonderful tourist attractions including the Royal Shakespeare Company, Kenilworth Castle, Warwick Castle, Leamington Spa, Bicester Village and Shakespeare's Family Houses – which have all supported the campaign.

Back row (from left to right): Helen Peters (CEO of Shakespeare’s England), Geoff Spooner (Chairman of Shakespeare’s England) and Paul Kehoe (CEO of Birmingham Airport).

Front row (from left to right): Emmeline Foster, Mollie Taylor and David Jackson all actresses and actors from Shakespeare Aloud!

This is just one of a number of exhibitions and events which the Shakespeare's England region is coordinating in the region to celebrate 400 years of William Shakespeare’s legacy. 2016 commemorates 400 years since the death of the world famous playwright and this special anniversary year is a unique opportunity to visit his home of Stratford-upon-Avon and the surrounding area.

The welcome will be in place throughout 2016 and has been made possible thanks to support from the Royal Shakespeare Company, Kenilworth Castle, Warwick Castle, Warwick District Council, Bicester Village and Shakespeare's Family Houses.

Geoff Spooner, Chairman of Shakespeare’s England and General Manager of Warwick Castle, said, “With over 10m passengers passing through Birmingham Airport every year, this is a fantastic opportunity for Shakespeare’s England to showcase some of the world class visitor attractions that its members provide and which are enjoyed by millions of visitors every year.

“This presence will generate increased awareness of Shakespeare’s England and with it, help to promote the equally impressive range of restaurants, theatre, overnight accommodation and many other attractions in this outstanding region.”

Birmingham Airport markets itself as Shakespeare’s Airport overseas, particularly in China and the US where so many people study and love The Bard’s work.

Jo Lloyd, Commercial Director for Birmingham Airport and Deputy Chair of Shakespeare’s England, said, “Birmingham Airport is proud to be Shakespeare’s Airport, which is proving to be very successful with overseas markets. This welcome not only cements our branding but also allows our passengers to feel involved in The Bard’s anniversary celebrations from the minute they arrive.”

Guests from the region’s business and tourism community were invited to a special event at the airport today (8th March) to witness the unveiling, and were treated to a special live performance from Shakespeare’s Aloud! actors from the Shakespeare's Family Houses.

Birmingham Airport Welcomes Czech Airlines
25th April 2016

Birmingham Airport has welcomed another new airline, with the arrival of the Czech Republic’s flag carrier, Czech Airlines.

(Left) David Vitasek, Area Sales Director for Czech Airlines and (right) William Pearson, Aviation Development Director for Birmingham Airport, are pictured with the crew of the Inaugural Czech Airlines Birmingham-Prague flight.

The airline has launched five times weekly services to Prague and offers a strong network of connections through Eastern Europe.

The Airbus A319 aircraft, with business and economy cabins, was welcomed with a traditional water arch salute from the Airport’s fire service on its arrival into Birmingham.

William Pearson, Birmingham Airport’s Aviation Development Director, said: “We are delighted to welcome Czech Airlines as a new partner, serving Prague five times a week. This direct route, which was unserved from Birmingham Airport, gives passengers the chance to visit this picturesque city, known as The City of a Hundred Spires, for either business or leisure at very reasonable prices.”

Steeped in history, Prague offers tourists a wide range of things to see and do; from exploring the old town and strolling over Charles Bridge by day, or taking in the views of the stunning Gothic cathedral at night. The streets are bustling with traders and entertainment and there are plenty of bars and restaurants for visitors to enjoy.

Commenting on the new Birmingham service, Ján Tóth, Czech Airlines Director of Commerce and Marketing, said: “I am glad that Czech Airlines is returning to Birmingham to connect it directly with Prague after more than 15 years. The Birmingham – Prague service is one of the eleven new routes we have prepared for 2016 summer season. We strongly believe that a direct connection between the both cities will significantly contribute to the growth of tourism between the West Midlands and Czech capital and vice versa. I would like to use the opportunity to thank the airport in Birmingham for their excellent work on the preparation of the launch of our new route."

The Airbus A319 aircraft has a total of 144 seats in full economy configuration or 12 business and 126 economy class. The schedule is as follows:

Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays: arrive into Birmingham 1700 and depart Birmingham 1740.
Thursdays: arrive into Birmingham at 1850 and depart at 1930
Sundays: arrive into Birmingham at 2000 and depart at 2040
After a fortnight of pleasant Spring weather since its inaugural flight into BHX (Birmingham Airport), the giant A380 arrived and departed in the wet on 15th April 2016, with 130 tonnes of jet thrust providing a great show on landing and takeoff.
Very HEAVY week at Birmingham Airport BHX (A380 A340 747)

The last week in March 2016 saw the start of the daily Emirates Airbus A380 and Qatar 787 services to Birmingham Airport, but also saw a wave of diversions from storm-hit Heathrow, including British Airways 747's (G-CIVI B744 BA246 and G-CIVB B744 BA206) and 777 (G-YMME B772 BA160) and brightly-painted South African A340 (ZS-SXD A343 SAA234).
The Heathrow diversions all arrived on 28th March 2016.

Qatar Airways Starts Service From Birmingham With Eight Weekly Boeing 787 Dreamliner Flights To Doha

Qatar Airways today inaugurated the airline’s fourth United Kingdom (U.K.) gateway, with direct flights between Doha and Birmingham connecting the city with more than 150 destinations worldwide.

The inaugural flight touched down at sunrise on 30 March and was greeted by a traditional water salute witnessed by a crowd of gathered media while Qatar Airways’ Chief Commercial Officer Dr. Hugh Dunleavy, who travelled on board the inaugural flight with U.K. Ambassador to Qatar, Mr. Ajay Sharma, was greeted at the arrival gate by Birmingham Airport’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Paul Kehoe.

The addition of Birmingham marks the fourth U.K. gateway for Qatar Airways after London Heathrow, Manchester and Edinburgh, with the eight weekly services operated by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker said: “We are delighted to commence services to Birmingham, our fourth U.K. gateway. This vibrant and economically powerful region represents an important addition to our worldwide network and is a testament to our commitment to the U.K. Passengers now have access to more than 150 global destinations, accessed via 73 flights per week from the U.K., facilitated by smooth transfers through our home and hub, Hamad International Airport.”

Qatar Airways now operates 73 flights per week to the U.K., with 42 flights per week to London Heathrow, 16 to Manchester, seven to Edinburgh and eight to Birmingham, from its state-of-the-art hub, Hamad International Airport.

Hamad International Airport offers 40,000 square metres of combined retail, food and beverage facilities, establishing the airport as a premier shopping and dining destination. With more than 70 retail outlets offering an unprecedented selection of designer labels, high street fashion, electronics and gourmet foods, the airport also features an airside hotel, complete with swimming pool, squash courts and spa.

The British Ambassador to Qatar, His Excellency Mr. Ajay Sharma said: “I was delighted to be able to travel on the inaugural flight from Doha to Birmingham. The launch of this new route will open up further opportunities for both Qatar and the U.K. Just like Doha, Birmingham and the surrounding area is host to a number of investment projects and tourist destinations that will appeal to investors and visitors. I am certain that this route will successfully enhance the partnership between our two countries.”

Birmingham Airport Chief Executive Officer, Paul Kehoe said: “We are extremely excited to be welcoming Qatar Airways to Birmingham Airport. Connecting the economically vibrant West Midlands region with the rapidly developing capital city of Doha will be hugely beneficial to passengers at both ends of the route. Additionally, the large selection of onward connections on Qatar’s network gives our long-haul travellers access to more of the most popular destinations around the world from Birmingham.”

A recent survey of 1,000 people from Birmingham and the surrounding region commissioned by Qatar Airways in the United Kingdom showed that 65 per cent of respondents would be more likely to use a local West Midlands airport if it had better long-haul connections.

The results clearly show that travellers in the West Midlands are keen to fly from a local airport if it offers a choice of long-haul destinations to rival those available elsewhere. With eight flights a week, including two flights on Saturdays – the equivalent of over 2,000 seats – Qatar Airways passengers travelling from Birmingham will have access to the world’s most exciting destinations, all within one convenient and seamless transfer at the airline’s state-of-the-art hub, Hamad International Airport.

The Birmingham route is operated by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner in a two-cabin configuration, comprising of 22 seats in Business Class and 232 Economy Class seats. All seats include individual television screens, with Economy Class customers benefitting from a screen 10.6 inches wide, offering the latest inflight entertainment comprised of up to 3,000 options, complimented by the airline’s award-winning service.

Every seat has direct aisle access in Business Class, where passengers can catch up on sleep in a fully-flat bed or make productive use of their time utilising the large work surface area. Passengers can also stay connected while travelling with the option of Wi-Fi which is available throughout the aircraft.

Qatar Airways’ home, Hamad International Airport, houses one of the world’s largest and most luxurious Business Class lounges – the Al Mourjan Business Lounge.

Connections between countries such as Pakistan and Australia from Birmingham have never been easier thanks to Qatar Airways. In Pakistan, the airline serves seven destinations including Karachi, Multan, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Peshawar and Islamabad. From 2nd March the airline commenced a new service to Sydney, Australia and from 2nd May Adelaide will also complement the existing Perth and Melbourne services.
