*RARE!* Turkish Airlines Airbus A330-343X TC-JNK at Birmingham Airport (BHX-EGBB) with ATC
Today's video is of a Turkish Airlines A330-300 making its first appearance at Birmingham Airport on a one-off charter from Istanbul. Date Filmed: 19th December 2014 Reg: TC-JNK c/n;1172. Watch as the aircraft approaches right over our heads to land on Runway 33 at Birmingham, and then taxi to stand 55C. It then taxies back out just after midday to depart home to Istanbul. The reason for the upgrade is believed to be because of heavy Christmas load factors. As always, full ATC communications have been included to make the video more enjoyable for the viewers. I have also included some other clips, such as the Emirates 777 & a Lufthansa A321 in the video. The Emirates 777 landed just as the Turkish A333 was at the holding point, so it was nice seeing two heavies at such close proximity at Birmingham Airport. A like would be very appreciated as it was a very long day from start to finish, but was definitely worth it! This aircraft was built and delivered to Turkish in 2010 and is named 'Sanliurfa.' I hope you enjoyed and thanks for watching! Please like, comment and subscribe for weekly Full HD videos.

*Rare* Turkish Airlines A330-343 Landing and Takeoff - Birmingham Airport - Beautiful Winter Day
Normally Turkish Airlines send an A321 or B738 on the Istanbul - Birmingham run, but on this rare occasion they sent an A330. To make it even better, an A330-300! Here it is landing and taking off at BHX, Central England.
On the 19th of December 2014 my mate and I headed up to Birmingham International Airport (BHX/EGBB) nice and early to catch the very rare Turkish Airlines Airbus A330-343. A smooth train journey and a pleasant cycle later, we arrived at the spotting location. Not long after we had set up THY9JQ made contact with Birmingham Radar. This was the first phase of all the ATC recordings made between the aircraft and the controllers during arrival, which are included in the video. I'll let the video show you just how stunning the morning was. You'll see the A333 land, taxi to stand, taxi for departure, and takeoff on runway 33. Notice in this video the runway extension was finished, so when aircraft use S1 (New Holding Point) you can get a great shot of them taxying around. I hope you enjoyed the video, more to come from this day trip!

Unlike the 757 and 767 main landing gear's four-wheeled bogies which rock back and forth on touchdown (see other video), the Airbus A330 seems to 'sit' on the rear pair of wheels on each bogie for a long time, sometimes with a little side-to-side rocking.
This video is a mix of slow motion and normal speed landing shots of Air Transat and China Southern A330's at Birmingham Airport BHX.

Today, the first flight from Beijing (PEK) to Birmingham (BHX) took place (CZ3001) and the aircraft landed at Birmingham Airport at 06:25.
I arrived at Birmingham airport at around 10:00 to film the departure at 12:00... But he flight was delayed for an hour due to a problem with the cargo bay door... So she ended up departing at around 13:00.
This wasn't good on her first flight as it put across a bad impression of the airport and the airline... Although the problem was neither(s) fault!
In the video, she taxied past OY-JTF which was not scheduled to arrive at BHX, but to fly straight to TPS ( Trapani Birgi Airport) so i'm not too sure why she came to Birmingham.
Hopefully we will see these flights continue into the future, as long as pax numbers stay high then i'm sure they will.

First Direct Charter Flight Lands at Birmingham Airport
22 July 2014
Birmingham Airport has welcomed the UK's first direct flight from China into a non-London airport and inaugurated the use of its recently extended runway as the service departed for its five thousand mile journey back to Beijing.
Tourism Minister Helen Grant MP visited the Airport to celebrate the historic flight and to congratulate Birmingham Airport on becoming the country's first gateway to offer Chinese charter packages to the UK. The flight was welcomed by Lord Popat of Harrow, Government Aviation spokesperson in the House of Lords, alongside dignitaries from the city.
The China Southern A330-200 aircraft, operated by one of China's leading tour operators, Caissa Travel Management Co Ltd, arrived into Birmingham Airport fully laden with 248 tourists venturing into the UK on organised package tours. The charter flights are the first in the UK to operate from China and the sell-out tours demonstrate the enormous demand for more flights between the two countries.
"This is a historic day for Birmingham, and indeed the Midlands region. Never before has a commercial airliner touched down on a runway outside of the Capital from China and we are enormously proud to be the first to make this happen," said Paul Kehoe, the Airport's Chief Executive.
"We have invested more than £200m in recent years to create an airport that can accommodate more traffic, particularly to and from long-haul markets, and today we saw the first use of our runway extension for what it was intended: to provide direct global connectivity from the Midlands," Paul added.
These flights are a result of three years’ collaborative working with Birmingham City Council, Marketing Birmingham, VisitBritain and the Government. The partnership forms part of the wider VisitBritain ‘GREAT China Welcome’ campaign, which was announced during the Prime Minister’s visit to China in November 2013 and aims to make the UK the most welcoming destination in Europe for Chinese visitors.
Helen Grant, Minister for Tourism, visited the airport today to congratulate it on becoming the country's first gateway to offer Chinese charter packages to the UK.
The Tourism Minister, said, “Our tourism industry helps us sell the country to the world and is contributing to our long-term economic plan. The new route opened today with a vital trade and tourism partner in China; this is great news for tourism businesses in the Midlands, making it easier and more attractive for Chinese visitors to explore all the fantastic attractions in the Midlands such as the Royal Shakespeare Company, Warwick Castle and the vibrant city of Birmingham itself.”
Lord Popat of Harrow, the Government’s aviation spokesperson in the House of Lords, was at the Airport to welcome the arrival of this historic flight and to greet the passengers, including Mr Ren Jun, Vice President of Caissa Travel Management.
Lord Popat said: “I welcome this inaugural flight from Beijing to Birmingham Airport. As the first direct flight from Beijing to a UK regional airport, this is a very significant moment. This is great news for Birmingham, the West Midlands and the UK, and underscores the role our regional airports have in generating growth as part of the UK’s long term economic plan.”
Other VIPs welcoming the service at the airport included the Lord Lieutenant for the West Midlands, The Lord Mayor of Birmingham and The Mayor of Solihull, as well as representatives from the Airport and Midlands' Chinese community.
Chen Xiaobing, the President of CAISSA, said: “The successful launch of the first tour group not only presents CAISSA’s spirit of advancing and innovating with the times, which has attracted wide attention, but also suggests that this strategic and successful cooperation has opened up a new channel for travelling to England. In the future, CAISSA will continue to enhance the partnership and make greater efforts in promoting the further growth of Chinese tourist numbers.”
The runway extension, completed in May this year, provides airlines with unlimited take off range, allowing jets to fly direct to China and beyond. This puts Birmingham in an ideal place to become an alternative gateway to the UK for long-haul air travel.
China is currently one of the fastest growing visitor source markets for the UK tourism industry at a rate of 20% year-on-year over the past few years. The size of the market has tripled over the past decade, and it is forecast to continue to grow strongly for the remainder of the decade. In 2012 the Chinese visitor market was worth £62 million to the West Midlands economy, with Birmingham now the 4th most popular destination for Chinese visitors in England.
To mark this historic occasion, the Leader of Birmingham City Council, Sir Albert Bore, hosted a Chinese themed Civic Reception at Birmingham Council House for 150 guests.
Sir Albert Bore, said: “This is an important day for Birmingham’s future as we directly connect our city with one of the world’s biggest markets. Birmingham’s reputation as a destination city is growing quickly in China due to profile-raising work over the past few years by many city stakeholders.
“This year foreign investors have created record numbers of jobs in Birmingham and this is due partly to our connectivity with Europe and the rest of the world.
“We are increasingly being seen by the Chinese as the gateway to the rest of the UK with nearby historic sites, such as Stratford-upon-Avon and Warwick, very close and London a short train ride away. They are realising that they don’t have to fly in to a London airport to visit the UK.”
The Beijing schedule will operate weekly through to the 5th August 2014, arriving into Birmingham at 0640 and departing for Beijing at 1200 each Tuesday.
The departure to Beijing today carried UK tourists travelling on an organised two week package tour, provided by Birmingham based Chinese travel agent, United Travel.
Chinese students from local universities were on hand to assist the airport and the arriving Chinese tourists through the terminal.
2014 is a year of milestones for Birmingham Airport as it also celebrated its 75th anniversary on the 8th July. During this period, it has handled more than 200m passengers through its doors.

Thomson Airways has launched its first Boeing 787 Dreamliner service from Birmingham Airport, as it departed for Montego Bay, Jamaica.
The Dreamliner aircraft will fly to Montego Bay, Jamaica; Bridgetown, Barbados; Sanford, Florida and Cancun in Mexico from Birmingham Airport throughout this summer and the coming winter.
Welcoming the inaugural flight, the Airport’s Commercial Director Jo Lloyd, said: “We are proud to have this new aircraft flying from Birmingham, and are thrilled local people will be able to fly to these popular long-haul holiday destinations in complete style and comfort, thanks to this state-of-the-art aircraft.
Thomson, which was the first UK airline to operate the 787 Dreamliner, has recently celebrated its first anniversary flying the aircraft. Since the first long haul flight back in July 2013, the fleet has made over 2,500 flights and carried over 670,000 customers.
Thomson Airway’s Managing Director John Murphy said: “We are delighted that we can offer the people of the Midlands flights to some of our most popular long haul destinations on our fantastic 787 aircraft. Since the arrival of the first Dreamliner to our fleet just over a year ago it has been a big hit with customers, with 96% rating their flight as good or excellent. We are sure the customers flying today will enjoy their experience on this revolutionary new aircraft.”
The Dreamliner has revolutionised air travel, leaving holidaymakers more relaxed and refreshed than ever before, with comfort and wellbeing features on-board reducing the effects of jet-lag. It can also fly much further distances than similar-sized aircraft, allowing it to reach far flung destinations such as Thailand and Mexico’s Pacific Coast without the need to refuel as it uses 20% less fuel.
With generous legroom and wider seats, the Dreamliner also offers larger windows and special lighting, as well as state of the art in-flight entertainment systems. Carrying 291 passengers, Premium Club seats 47 in a 2-3-2 configuration and Economy Club seats 244 in a 3-3-3 configuration.

Midlands Connect to speak for the region with one voice in winning future investment for transport
Midlands Connect to speak for the region with one voice in winning future investment for transport
27th June 2014
A new group is to champion strategic transport investment across the entire Midlands region. Midlands Connect is a collaboration of Midlands-wide local enterprise partnerships (LEPs), Network Rail, the Highways Agency, local authorities and the business community. At a breakfast meeting at Birmingham Airport business leaders from across the region came together to discuss the way ahead.
A major economic study, the first phase of Midlands Connect, is examining and assessing where connectivity improvements are likely to have the greatest long-term impact on employment and the economy.
Cllr Roger Lawrence, (pictured) chairman of the West Midlands Integrated Transport Authority which formally approved the launch of Midlands Connect, said working as one body in identifying areas for investment to then maximise growth potential would be key.
“It is only with a clear and unified voice that the Midlands can really punch its weight and realise its true potential,” he said.
“By talking to businesses and pulling together growth plans from the local enterprise partnerships we can create an integrated scheme that serves economic need and is supported by good transport.
“HS2 may be some years away but it is going to be a game-changer for this region. We have to get connectivity to it planned in advance so that we can maximise economic growth and our ability to move around.”
The economic study launched by Midlands Connect is due to conclude in July and the group has already begun to seek funding from the government and other sources.
Once up and running it will then focus on:
Developing an integrated plan for improved connectivity to HS2
Addressing east-west Midlands connections
Addressing capacity for freight movements
Improving connectivity to international markets via the region’s airports
Links have already been established by West Midlands LEPs and chambers of commerce with their counterparts in the east Midlands. The East Midlands councils have also expressed support.
Andrew Cleaves, chairman of the West Midlands Cross-Local Enterprises Transport Group said: “These are early days but already there is a consensus across the entire region that working together on improving our transport infrastructure is far more effective than as individual bodies.
“Economic progress is not governed by municipal boundaries - developments at somewhere like Birmingham Airport or on the M1 can have an impact all over the Midlands, so we need to capture that and use it to our advantage.”

Recorded with Panasonic HC-W850 from Sheldon Park.
Because of the hot weather and uninterupted sun and the 50x zoom required, the heat haze is extreme, so apologies for that.
The audio from the tower is being picked up from a receiver next to me. Unfortunatly there were lots of kids about so it is not at clear as it could have been.
Also there was significant instability because of the long zoom so some stabilisation in post has tightened the framing more than I would have liked.

First visit to Birmingham Airport BHX. For anyone visiting BHX for the first time this is what you can expect to get when setup on the footpath across the A45 in the middle of the landing lights. I was using a Samsung GC100 camera with a zoom equivalent to 420mm. Not the easiest camera to zoom with while recording. Excuse the wind noise. There is not much to hear anyway as the aircraft are drowned out by the traffic.

The Spitfire soared into the skies as part of Birmingham Airport’s 75th anniversary celebrations. The Rolls-Royce Supermarine 389 Spitefire DR19 (G-RRGN) flew over Birmingham Airport (BHX) runway 33 at 19.38 on 18th June 2014. Almost 12,000 Spitfires were believed to have been made at the Castle Bromwich factory, nearly half of all those built.
The Midlands airport was officially opened on a rainy Saturday on the 8th July 1939 by HRH The Duchess of Kent, but just two months later the Second World War broke out and the Air Ministry requisitioned the airport so all civil flying was stopped.
On Monday 8th July 1946, exactly seven years after the airport’s official opening, the facility was reopened for civil flying and over the next seven and a half decades more than 200 million people have used the airport.
Originally operating from the ‘Elmdon’ terminal, which still stands proud on the western side of the airfield, the rapid growth in air travel in the 70s meant that a new terminal building was needed, and on the 30th May 1984 a new terminal was opened by HRH The Queen.
Although now twice the size, this remains the site for Birmingham Airport’s operation, which today sees more than nine million passengers use the facility each year.
Commenting on the milestone and the launch of a commemorative logo to use throughout the year, Paul Kehoe, Chief Executive of the Airport, said:
“Birmingham Airport has played an important role in the success of the region for 75 years. It was built with the aim of creating jobs and stimulating industry; and that it has certainly done.
“Back in the early years, only the privileged could enjoy the luxury of flying but as it became more accessible to the masses, more and more people took to the skies from Birmingham to experience the wonder of air travel and seek new adventures overseas.
“Today, Birmingham Airport continues to bring people together, delivers goods to global destinations and connects industry with opportunities around the world - reliably, safely and speedily.”
This spring, the airport opened its extended runway which allows airlines to fly further than ever before from Birmingham, including the Far East, The Americas and South Africa. The last time the runway was extended was back in 1966 by 300ft, which attracted new tour operators using jet flights allowing Birmingham Airport to thrive. Other key milestones over the last 75 years have included:
- 1949 The first post war scheduled service took off from Birmingham to Paris, operated by a BEA Dakota.
- 1955 A record 110,000 passengers used the airport during this year.
- 1959 800ft runway extension opened and name changed from Elmdon to Birmingham Airport.
- 1960 New ‘International Building’ opened at Elmdon to cope with increased passenger numbers.
- 1966 A further 300ft extension to the runway was built.
- 1978 The magic one million passenger mark was reached.
- 1980 Concorde flew from Birmingham for the first time, to Paris.
- 1984 New airport opened by HRH The Queen and operations moved to the new site.
- 1989 3.5 million passengers travelled through the new airport.
- 1991 British Airways’ Eurohub opened.
- 1998 President Clinton and other world leaders land at Birmingham Airport for the G8 Summit.
- 2000 HRH The Queen opens the new Millennium Link terminal extension.
- 2002 Passenger numbers reach 8m.
- 2003 The new Air Rail link people mover system opens, connecting the airport with Birmingham International station.
- 2009 New £45m International Pier opened.
- 2014 400m runway extension operational.
- The commemorative logo is in-keeping with the airport’s corporate brand and symbolises the 75 years, from 1939 to 2014, using aircraft icons to signify global flight. It will be used throughout the year by the airport.

Passenger Numbers Soar as Birmingham Airport Records Busiest April in History
Passenger Numbers Soar as Birmingham Airport Records Busiest April in History
13 May 2014
Birmingham Airport records the busiest April in its history as over 750,000 passengers choose to fly from Birmingham.
Birmingham Airport has recorded the busiest April in its history, as more than 750,000 passengers passed through the terminal last month, a 16.7% increase compared to the same period last year.
Latest figures reveal the Airport handled 758,456 passengers in April, beating its previous record for the month set in 2009 by 5.7%.
The record-breaking month also saw a major rise in the number of passengers flying on long-haul services from Birmingham, up by 20.9% compared to April last year.
Scheduled routes that saw the biggest increase last month were Jersey (+173.2%), Fuerteventura (+132.1%), Stuttgart (+98%), Arrecife (+78.2%) and Faro (+77.6%). Charter services to Malta (+100%), Portugal (+100%) and Italy (+90.6%) also experienced significant growth.
Paul Kehoe, Birmingham Airport’s CEO, said: “To record the busiest April in our history is a tremendous achievement. It demonstrates the strong demand that exists for flights to and from Birmingham and the progress we have made over the past 12 months in particular.
“A strong performance in April is the perfect way to enter the summer season, a period which will also see Birmingham become the first UK airport outside of London to offer direct charter flights to China, as well as new flights starting to Porto, Cologne, Florence, Ibiza, Malta and Athens, among others.”

Birmingham attracts record number of international visitors
By E Birmingham

Birmingham attracts record number of international visitors
Birmingham attracted more international visits last year than ever before according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The research released on Thursday 8th May, reports that there were almost one million visits to the city last year (941,000) - an increase of 228,000 on 2012's figure of 713,000.
With numbers rising by a third (32%) in the last year alone, Birmingham's growth in attracting visitors is higher than any other city in the UK. The national growth of international visits was just 5.6%, while London managed 8.6%.
Birmingham is the fourth most visited city in the UK, with the capitals London and Edinburgh, followed by Manchester leading the table. Birmingham has closed the gap on Manchester's international visits from 219,000 to 47,000 in one year.
The city's focus on key international visitor markets, including India and China appear to be reaping swift rewards. Direct flights from India and China as well as the City's strategy to target these areas have led to an increase in visitor numbers. Sales missions and campaigns with Chinese and Indian travel agents are being cited as key reasons for the growth. With many booking trips online, Marketing Birmingham also points to their integrated online offer to make planning and booking trips to the city easier.
The boost in Birmingham's profile has also attracted record levels of investment, with foreign direct investment in 2012/13 up by more than 50% against a national increase of just 11%*. This has created an additional 4,000 local jobs and is worth an estimated £174 million** to the local economy per year.
Emma Gray, Director of Marketing, Marketing Birmingham, the city's strategic marketing partnership, which operates leisure and business tourism programmes, Visit and Meet Birmingham said;
"Traditionally we've been known as a national destination with visitors coming from across the UK for our shopping, food and attractions. This is now widening and Birmingham is on the international map. Working with the Airport as well as VisitBritain and VisitEngland we have focused on raising the city's profile with international travellers, both business and leisure. Top attractions last year such as the Black Country Living Museum, the new Library of Birmingham and the 50 festivals that took place within the city all attracted overseas visitors.
"Our strategy has been to target international visitors and to focus on markets with large numbers of potential visitors. Our geographical position enables us to be a gateway to the UK, visitors can be based here and easily travel to all parts of the country. We also like to think that our range of attractions and our reputation for being a city of food, our shops and our warm welcome are noticed and all make a real difference to how we are perceived overseas."
Paul Kehoe, Birmingham Airport's Chief Executive and Chairman of Marketing Birmingham, said,
"These figures are testament to the partnerships in place to promote the city both in the UK and overseas and validates that Birmingham has become a world-class tourist destination.
"The Airport broke the nine million passengers mark last year for the first time since 2009, launched several new routes including Amritsar, Bordeaux, Knock, Stockholm and Barcelona, and saw growth on existing routes such as Dublin, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, New York, Dubai, Knock and Istanbul; all key departure points for inbound tourists.
"This growth demonstrates that the Airport is playing a vital role in connecting Birmingham with the world and we are continually growing our network, with further new routes launching this year to Beijing, Porto, Cologne, Florence and many more.
"Greater connectivity and the continued drive by the Airport, Marketing Birmingham and other tourism partners to put the city and region on the map will ensure that Birmingham's tourism figures will keep on climbing in this direction."
Working together Marketing Birmingham and Birmingham Airport (BHX) have attracted new routes into the city's airport during 2013 including Delhi, Lyon, Gothenburg, Toulouse, Barcelona and Stockholm.
Birmingham attracted a record 33.8 million visitors in 2012, contributing £5.1 million to the local economy, an increase of 11% since 2006. This supported more than 61,000 jobs for the local workforce.
"Our strategy remains to target the international market, to continue to work with the airport and to promote Birmingham and its surrounding area to an international audience keen to visit as both a business as well as leisure traveller," added Emma Gray.

Wake vortex variety
The wake is the stream of turbulent air behind a plane, and everything on the plane in contact with the outside air contributes to it.
This video shows some of the components of the wake which are made impressively visible when atmospheric or other conditions are just right.
These include the following vortices: the big powerful ones which swirl off the wingtip areas; the narrow 'tubes' of condensed water which spin off the flap outer edges; the spirals coming off the propeller tips.

24 February 2014
To mark the retirement of the A300 from commercial service, and to celebrate the impact the A300 had made on the airline over the previous 24 years during which the fleet had accumulated over 300,000 flying hours and had carried over twenty million passengers. Monarch’s last ever passenger carrying A300 service, flight MON300, was scheduled to depart at 14:40 and was booked to carry a full load of 347 enthusiasts, guests and senior staff from the airline. Enthusiasts came not only from the UK, but also from across Europe and even from the USA to fly the A300 one last time. The crew selected for the last flight were all very experienced. By early 2014, all of Monarch’s A300 type rated first officers had moved on to other fleets, so for the final few weeks Monarch’s A300 flights were operated by two captains. Monarch Chief Pilot Captain Martin Pound was in charge of the last flight. Captain Pound said “I was the first [A300] project pilot appointed in 1989. I was involved the in the delivery of the aircraft and the first commercial flight from London Gatwick to Toulouse in 1990. I flew the first flight and now I am flying the last. I am very proud, but at the same time very sad.” On the last flight, Captain Pound was assisted by Captain Stewart Smith, another very experienced A300 pilot. Both Captain Pound and Captain Smith were looking forward to going on Airbus A320-family training courses after G-OJMR had been retired, but they also agreed that they had enjoyed their many years of flying the A300. Captain Smith said “It’s a pilot’s aeroplane, a pleasure to fly by hand rather than an aeroplane flown primarily by computers.” In addition to the wealth experience on the flight deck, the passengers in the cabin were looked after by a cadre of cabin crew who were also extremely familiar with the A300 – between them they had accumulated almost 208 years of flying during their careers.

Monarch A300 G-OJMR last Commercial Flight arriving at BHX
Today 13/04/14 Monarch airlines operated the last flight of there Airbus A300 from Gatwick to Birmingham via a low fly pass of a 1000ft over Manchester Airport. This aircraft was delivered to Monarch in May 1991.
The A300 aircraft type has been in service with the airline since 1990, and has carried more than 20 million holiday makers while in Monarch colours. The final A300 airframe in the fleet, G-OJMR has been retired on Sunday, 13th April 2014, having served the airline for 23 years after being delivered new 1991. In a fitting end to this aircraft’s service, the final flight was piloted by the Chief Pilot of Monarch Airlines, Martin Pound. Martin has served Monarch for over 36 years and in 1991, was the pilot charged with flying the first A300 into service.
Monarch’s A300s are the final passenger-carrying examples in service with a European airline, and with its impending retirement from service, the passenger variant of Airbus’ first entry in to the commercial airliner market, will become a very rare sight in European skies.

FINAL FLIGHT Monarch Airbus A300 G-OJMR Approach + Landing at BHX
In 2013, Monarch Airlines announced that they were to retire the last of their Airbus A300-600R aircraft after many years service. Later in the year, they announced an enthusiast flight from London Gatwick to Birmingham, to commemorate the retirement of the type from the Monarch fleet. Closer to the date, a flypast was also announced at Manchester as part of the flight.
This video sees us on board G-OJMR (the final Airbus A300 in the Monarch Airlines fleet) as we approach Runway 33 at Birmingham Airport, our final destination. Loud applause fills the cabin several times, and an emotional speech from the lead Cabin Crew member tops off a very special occasion.

Prime Minister David Cameron Visits Birmingham Airport

Prime Minister David Cameron Visits Birmingham Airport
Prime Minister Welcomes The Announcement of 8000 Jobs at Birmingham Airport
David Cameron has welcomed the announcement that 8,000 jobs will be created in the Midlands as Birmingham Airport expands to cope with increased demand from around the globe.
On a visit to the airport, which is just weeks away from having its runway extended, the Prime Minister heard that 4,000 jobs would be created at the Airport and a further 4,000 across the supply chain by 2020.
Prime Minister David Cameron said: "The announcement of 8,000 jobs from Birmingham Airport is more great news in a week where we are cutting tax for 26million hard-working people and taking over 3million people out of income tax altogether. These are two significant announcements which will help give people financial security for the future."
The Prime Minister welcomed the news after witnessing the final lights being fitted on the runway extension by engineering apprentices, who have gained full-time employment as a direct result of the infrastructure project.
As a sign of confidence in the expanded airport, last month saw an announcement that flights between Beijing and Birmingham, operated by China Southern Airlines, will begin this summer.
They will be the first direct charter flights from China to Britain and the first ever direct flights from China to a British airport outside of London.
Paul Kehoe, Birmingham Airport's CEO, added: "Receiving this endorsement from the Prime Minister as our runway extension nears completion is fantastic for everyone involved in the project. Birmingham is recognised as an airport that is delivering real growth and supporting thousands of new jobs.
"The main driver for this growth is the runway extension. By 2020, based on today's demand, Birmingham Airport is forecast to handle 15 million passengers a year, an increase of six million. This passenger growth will generate an additional 4,000 jobs on-site and a further 4,000 in the immediate supply chain."
During the visit, Mr Cameron also met with local business leaders from across the region, who welcome greater connectivity from their local airport.
The longer runway will allow aircraft to fly to destinations further away and support more direct long-haul flights to emerging economies currently out of reach, such as Brazil and China, as well as tourist hotspots like the West Coast of the USA.
The runway expansion is just one part of a long-term investment programme, worth over £300 million at the airport. The earlier stages have already delivered a new combined terminal, a new maintenance hangar for larger aircraft and a state-of-the-art air traffic control tower.
The airport development has been funded through private sector investment, and will support the airport's long term ambition of quadrupling the annual number of passengers to 36 million.

First Ever UK Charter Flights From China to the UK Announced
Direct charter flights between Beijing and Birmingham to operate this summer with China Southern Airlines - the first airport outside London to offer direct flights to China.
The Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Maria Miller, has endorsed news that Birmingham Airport will become the country’s first gateway to offer UK charter package tours from China and the first UK airport outside of London to launch direct charter flights to China.
The joint initiative between Birmingham Airport, China Southern Airlines, Caissa Travel Management Co Ltd and Birmingham China specialist agency, United Travel, demonstrates the enormous demand for more flights between the two countries.
The Secretary of State said, “This is great news for Birmingham and Britain. China is a vital trade and tourism partner for us and opening up this new route will encourage even more Chinese visitors to fly to our country and experience more of what our GREAT nation has to offer outside of the capital - from tourist attractions to shopping, culture to heritage. The new route will provide great investment and job opportunities for businesses in Birmingham and the Midlands.”
It is now possible to fly direct between Birmingham and Beijing thanks to a £40 million investment by Birmingham Airport to extend the runway, which will open next month. The runway extension will provide airlines with unlimited take off range, allowing jets to fly direct to China, and puts Birmingham in an ideal place to become an alternative gateway to the UK for flights from China and beyond.
The summer programme will involve direct flights operated by China Southern Airlines arriving from Beijing into Birmingham between July 22nd and August 6th. Caissa, one of China’s leading travel specialists, will sell a range of organised package tours to Chinese visitors seeking to explore the world class tourism attractions in the Midlands, the North of England and London. China Southern Airlines will operate a 248 seat A330-200 aircraft on the route.
Paul Kehoe, Birmingham Airport’s Chief Executive, said, “Today’s announcement is a result of three years’ collaborative working with Birmingham City Council, Marketing Birmingham, VisitBritain and Shakespeare’s England to establish relationships in China and promote the many jewels that the Midlands has to offer, such as The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), Shakespeare’s Birthplace, Warwick Castle, Bicester Village and the vibrant city of Birmingham itself.
“There is an alternative gateway into the UK for those wanting to visit Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwick and Birmingham - destinations that make this country great. This partnership also demonstrates that the demand is there from passengers across the UK who want long-haul flights to places like China from their nearest gateway.”
China is currently one of the fastest growing visitor source markets for the UK tourism industry at a rate of 20% year-on-year over the past few years. The size of the market has tripled over the past decade, and it is forecast to continue to grow strongly for the remainder of the decade. In 2012 the Chinese visitor market was worth £15 million to the West Midlands economy, with Birmingham now the 4th most popular destination for Chinese visitors in England.
Chen Xiaobing, CEO of Caissa Travel, said: "Birmingham is not only the UK's second largest city, but it is also an important tourist destination of Caissa's. This cooperation will welcome Chinese tourists to Britain, opening up an important gateway to further expand the Chinese European outbound travel business.
“As we know, when the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, visited China last year, he pointed out the great potential of tourism cooperation between the two countries. Earlier, the British Tourist Authority and Caissa Travel, a large integrated tour operator, signed a strategic cooperation agreement for three years to strive for and to become the largest market in recent years. This agreement is one of the largest strategic travel marketing plans in mainland China.
“The two parties will make joint efforts to develop tourism projects in the UK, both in publicity and promotion, in order to further grow Chinese tourism in the UK."
A number of ‘seat only’ tickets and package holidays, flying direct, are also available for UK residents wishing to visit China. These flights and holidays will be sold exclusively through Birmingham based China specialist agent, United Travel, by calling +44 121 666 6338 or www.united-tvl.com
Ann Leung, Director, United Travel, commented, “For many years we have been calling for direct flights between Birmingham and China to satisfy growing demand. We are constantly receiving enquiries from business travellers and tourists wishing to visit China, and students and Chinese people wanting to travel home. Birmingham needs direct flights to China and we are therefore incredibly proud to be part of this important initiative.”
Both Birmingham City Council and Marketing Birmingham have visited China numerous times over the last few years in order to develop relationships and promote the region; groundwork that has been vital in finalising this programme. Sir Albert Bore, Leader of Birmingham City Council, said, “China is a hugely significant market for Birmingham and the West Midlands, so we look forward to the prospect of even more Chinese visitors coming to the city using this new, landmark route.
“We are working proactively to ensure that Birmingham is viewed as a key location on the itineraries of Chinese travel agents and investors – and our efforts are bearing fruit.
“While the city has recently secured groundbreaking deals from Chinese investors, research undertaken by Marketing Birmingham’s Regional Observatory also indicates that Chinese tourists are extremely positive about the city’s range of activities, connectivity and reputation. Our challenge now is to continue to offer a warm welcome to new Chinese visitors wishing to explore our popular leisure and business destination.”
The partnership forms part of the wider VisitBritain ‘GREAT China Welcome’ campaign, which was announced during the Prime Minister’s visit to China in November 2013 and aims to make the UK the most welcoming destination in Europe for Chinese visitors.
Sandie Dawe, CEO of VisitBritain, added, “Britain is attracting more Chinese travellers than ever before and our strategy for growth recognises the need to develop more airline routes and greater access across Britain. The Birmingham route will encourage Chinese visitors to explore new areas of Britain and help to achieve our target of welcoming 650,000 Chinese visits a year by 2020.”
As a founding member of the ‘GREAT China Welcome’ campaign and leading up to the start of the new flights, Birmingham Airport is investing to ensure Chinese visitors receive a warm welcome and a stress free journey through the terminal on arrival. This investment includes Chinese terminal signage, staff cultural awareness training, mandarin speaking front of house staff, specific web-pages translated into mandarin, and a dedicated VAT refund facility for passengers to use before jetting back home.

DC-10 aircraft makes 'historic' final flight from Birmingham
Biman Bangladesh Airlines DC-10 lands. The aircraft will be flown back to Bangladesh and sold off, Birmingham Airport said
The final commercial passenger flight of a DC-10 aeroplane has been made from Birmingham Airport in front of enthusiasts from across the world.
The three-engined aircraft made its first appearance in Birmingham in a demonstration flight in 1972.
The last plane's operator, Biman Bangladesh Airlines, will now switch to using a Boeing 777.
About 1,000 fans bought tickets for one-hour pleasure flights run by the company to mark the aircraft's passing.
On Thursday, a group flew on the plane's final international journey from Dhaka to Birmingham Biman originally said the plane's final resting place would be Bruntingthorpe Aviation Museum in Lutterworth, Leicestershire, but the firm has since decided to return it to Bangladesh to be scrapped.
Graham Dinsdale has been running a merchandise stall for aviation enthusiasts at Birmingham Airport since Saturday. He said 1,000 people had bought models of the DC-10 and commemorative T-shirts.
"One customer from Singapore bought one of everything - it took me about half an hour to serve him," he said.
Bernie Leighton is managing correspondent of airlinereporter.com and travelled from the US to be on the last flight. He was also on board the DC-10's final international voyage from Dhaka on Thursday. "It's always sad to say goodbye to another aircraft type. The skies are getting less diverse," he said. "When the plane lands I'll be happy I was on it but also sad; there's really nothing like it left now."
Chris Sloan, founder and editor-in-chief of flight website Airchive, travelled from Miami to be on the flight. "I've been on a lot of first flights but I've never been on the last flight of an aircraft before," he said.
