And now for something completely different! I spend a good week and a bit in Birmingham in January this year and had a day free to go spotting so expect a few more Birmingham Airport videos over the coming month. And yes I did bring my tripod with me halfway around the world specifically to get this shot!

I didn't look up any of the arrivals before spotting that day so it was complete luck that I ended up catching Emirates' daytime arrival into Birmingham (EK39) and a few hours later the departure (EK40) back to Dubai. That day Emirates flew A6-EBP, a Boeing 777-31H(ER) which was built in 2006 and has been with Emirates ever since.

Winter Holiday Departures - Birmingham Airport - Thomas Cook, Monarch, Thomson 787 A321 A320 (+ATC)

Three consecutive holiday airlines depart Birmingham Airport to three completely different destinations on a beautiful December Morning.

This was filmed on the 19th December 2014 when I went up to Birmingham International Airport (BHX/EGBB) to catch a rare Turkish A330 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzHRv...). This was filmed at around 11:45am during a very busy period that lasted around half an hour. First to depart behind an arriving Flybe was a Thomas Cook A321 - fairly rare (at the time) as it was replacing the normal B757. The Thomas Cook was departing as TCX51RD to Tenerife. Next was a Monarch A320; both it and the Thomson 787 lined up on the runway at the same time to save time and increase runway usage efficiency. The Monarch was departing to London Gatwick on a positioning flight as MON320P. Shortly after the Monarch got airbourne the Thomson 787 powered up and took off runway 33 as TOM814 to Bridgetown, Barbados.

I really like this spotting location, even more so now the runway extension has finished as you can get great shots of aircraft taxying along to S1. Also you'll be able to listen to Air Traffic Control (ATC) communications. I decided to add some fairly appealing subtitles - this takes a long time to edit so your support will be appreciated more than ever. Thanks guys, take it easy.

Today's video is of a beautiful Thomson Boeing 787 Dreamliner at Birmingham Airport last year in the winter sunshine. Reg: G-TUIE c/n;37227 Date Filmed: 19th December 2014. After heading up to Birmingham to catch the first visit of a Turkish A330, me and my mate were also expecting to get a glimpse of a Thomson Dreamliner departing to Bridgetown, and we weren't disappointed! At around 11am, it appeared from behind the terminal, only one hour late following two other aircraft, a Thomas Cook A321SL and a Monarch A320. The 787 taxied all the way to the new holding point S1, at the end of the new extended runway. Being number 3 in sequence for departure, it had to wait a while, made even longer by three other aircraft landing while it was holding short. It was then cleared to line up behind the departing Monarch from the intersection ahead, and then the 787 was then cleared for takeoff, on its way to an equally as sunny but much warmer Barbados. This Boeing 757 is used by Honeywell to test engines, which are attached to the unusual pylon projecting from the fuselage. It spent several weeks in early summer undergoing works at the Monarch Aircraft Engineering facility at Birmingham Airport, making numerous test flights, taxiing runs and fast runs down the runway.

The region is attracting an increasing number of visitors from the Far East. Birmingham left London in the shade in the tourism stakes in 2014 with a record 32 per cent increase in visitors – as millions flocked to the second city from the US and China.

The city welcomed unprecedented tourist numbers in the last 12 months with a total of 34 million visitors spending more than £5 billion, according to Marketing Birmingham.

The influx saw Birmingham’s tourist and business visitors grow by a record 32 per cent compared to London’s growth of just 8.9 per cent, said the agency.

Emirates Third daily flight to Dubai from Birmingham Airport starts

Emirates have commenced a third daily flight from Birmingham Airport on Saturday 1st August 2015. Emirates flight EK41 is scheduled to depart Dubai International Airport at 0235hrs and arrive in Birmingham at 0705hrs. The outbound flight EK42 will depart Birmingham Airport at 0910hrs and arrive in Dubai at 1910hrs, well-timed for a good night’s sleep and a fresh start in the city the following day. The additional service adds seven more inbound flights a week to Dubai for Birmingham, increasing passenger and cargo capacity on the route by 50 percent.

Paul Kehoe, Birmingham Airport CEO, said: “Emirates’ decision to add a third daily service to Dubai and beyond from Birmingham Airport clearly shows the strong demand that exists in the city and the region for passengers who want connectivity to Dubai, Asia and Australia.

The Secretary of State for Transport Rt Hon Patrick McLoughlin MP has welcomed the first passengers on a flight from China in the first of an extended series of flights, which, if developed into a daily service, could deliver an additional £81 million to the UK economy each year, including £62 million per year for the West Midlands.

The Boeing 767-300 aircraft, operated by Hainan Airlines, arrived this morning with 233 passengers visiting the UK on organised package tours. This is the first in a series of flights that will see more than 4,000 Chinese visitors to the region over the summer months through packages offered by Caissa Touristic, one of China’s largest tour operators.

Secretary of State for Transport Rt Hon Patrick McLoughlin MP said:

“Airports play a vital role in our long-term economic plan so this route between Birmingham and China is a great step forward.

“The new service will showcase the West Midlands to thousands of visitors and potential investors.

“Birmingham Airport’s work towards a daily service shows their commitment to creating opportunities and new jobs in the region.”

Paul Kehoe, CEO of Birmingham Airport, has joined business leaders in hailing the flights as a sign of continued growth in the region:

“Last year’s test of direct Beijing flights were the result of collaborative working with Birmingham City Council, Marketing Birmingham, VisitBritain and the Government. I am delighted that we have been able to push on from last year’s success to offer a series of 34 flights this summer.

“The Midlands is a powerful engine of growth at the heart of our country and needs direct aviation to succeed. As the only region to have a positive balance of trade with China, we know how much the Midlands tourism and manufacturing industries value this direct connection.

“All involved in the deal intend that these Hainan flights will build over the coming years, before becoming the first scheduled service between a non-London UK airport and mainland China.”

A daily scheduled route would offer significant potential economic benefits to the West Midlands. In a forthcoming report being undertaken by York Aviation, the transport analysts say that “such a flight could support additional Gross Value Added in the region of around £62 million a year and around 1350 jobs”.

In addition, York Aviation say that the time savings for passengers in the West Midlands, able to fly from Birmingham to China rather than via Heathrow, would be worth £5 million a year to the economy.

Businesses across the region have been quick to welcome this development.

“At present, BSA use carriers to fly from Birmingham Airport to European hubs or to Dubai to connect with long-haul flights, as this is easier than travelling to Heathrow. When BSA visits customers in Taiwan, we do fly from Heathrow via Hong Kong but this incurs the added inconvenience of travelling to and from London: fighting through traffic congestion and incurring parking expense and hotel fees.

“These difficulties also affect our overseas customers visiting our plant here in Birmingham. It would be of tremendous benefit and put Birmingham on the international map if Birmingham Airport could cater for long-haul point-to-point services.”

It spent several weeks in early summer undergoing works at the Monarch Aircraft Engineering facility at Birmingham, making numerous test flights, taxiing runs and fast runs down the runway.

American Airlines Launch Flights From Birmingham to New York JFK
Birmingham Airport and American Airlines have launched direct daily flights between Birmingham and New York John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK). The route will provide nearly 100,000 seats between Birmingham Airport and JFK, and through the American Airlines and British Airways joint business and oneworld airline alliance, will offer a British Airways code share, allowing customers to earn and redeem BA air miles and Avios points.

David Winstanley, Chief Operating Officer for Birmingham Airport said: “We warmly welcome today’s new American Airlines daily service between Birmingham and New York JFK as it provides more choice for people wanting to access this vibrant US destination and has created almost 100,000 extra seats between the two cities.

“American Airlines’ strong route network from JFK also broadens onward connectivity across the Americas and Canada, including nearly hourly connections to LA, San Francisco and Orlando, and international flights down to Buenos Aires, San Paulo and Rio, as well as up to Toronto and Montreal.

“This joint business and oneworld alliance with British Airways also means that we see the return of a British Airways code share to Birmingham, allowing customers to earn and redeem BA air miles and Avios points.”

Last year, American tourists spent around £40m in Birmingham and the Midlands exported £4.8bn to North America, giving a trade surplus of £2.9bn; the largest of any UK region.

David added: “This service will not only help to build on the region’s success in attracting trading with America, but with so many wonderful places on our doorstep such as Stratford-up-Avon, Warwick and the Cotswolds, we’re confident that this new flight will draw in even more tourists and business to the region.”

The American Airlines flight will operate daily, arriving from JFK into Birmingham at 0700 local UK time. It will depart for its return leg at 0900, arriving into New York JFK at 1155 local US time.

The new flights are available via AA.com and BA.com and through travel agents. The service will be operated by a Boeing 757 aircraft with 16 business and 160 economy seats.

Helen Grice, manager at the British American Business Council for the midlands, commented: “The British American Business Council (BABC) Midlands is delighted to welcome American Airlines to Birmingham. The USA is the world’s largest and most competitive economy in the world, it is also the UK’s top export destination. The extra flights will benefit our 2000 members as well as the Region’s businesses by increasing opportunities for trade and providing more choice when flying to and from the US.”

Birmingham Airport marks its 75th Anniversary

This year Birmingham Airport is marking 75 years of being in business. It has come a long way since it’s humble beginnings in 1939 when it was known as Elmdon Airport. Over the years its been rebranded, reopened and expanded making it one of the UK’s busiest Airport.

Commenting on the milestone, Paul Kehoe, Chief Executive of the Airport, said: “Birmingham Airport has played an important role in the success of the region for 75 years. It was built with the aim of creating jobs and stimulating industry; and that it has certainly done.

“Back in the early years, only the privileged could enjoy the luxury of flying but as it became more accessible to the masses, more and more people took to the skies from Birmingham to experience the wonder of air travel and seek new adventures overseas.

“Today, Birmingham Airport continues to bring people together, delivers goods to global destinations and connects industry with opportunities around the world - reliably, safely and speedily.”

Last spring, the airport opened its extended runway which allows airlines to fly further than ever before from Birmingham, including the Far East, The Americas and South Africa. The last time the runway was extended was back in 1966 by 300ft, which attracted new tour operators using jet flights allowing Birmingham Airport to thrive.

International Tourism rose 32% in Birmingham

International tourist numbers in Birmingham alone rose by 32% last year helping to swell the city's economy by £5bn.

Today delegates from India, a country considered key to this success, were in the city as part of a campaign to attract even more tourists to the whole of our region.

Paul Kehoe, Chief Executive of Birmingham Airport, said:

“By playing host to important tourism delegations from across the globe in the coming weeks, we are opening up the region to a whole new visitor base, further increasing our international appeal.

“2015 is already shaping up to be another great year for the Airport, with record passenger numbers in January adding to the launch of Icelandair’s new service between Reykjavik and Birmingham. We look forward to welcoming more visitors to the area this year than ever before.”

This month also sees Birmingham host a number of Australian travel consultants to promote the region’s leisure tourism offer ahead of two major international sporting events involving Australia in 2015. In July, Edgbaston Stadium welcomes the third Ashes Test Match, while Villa Park – home of Aston Villa Football Club – stages the Rugby World Cup fixture between Australia and Uruguay in September.

Birmingham will welcome 10 of Germany’s leading conference and events organisers at the end of February to highlight its business tourism credentials. In association with VisitEngland, the delegation – from eight German cities which fly directly into Birmingham Airport – will visit venues including Hilton Garden Inn, Aston Villa, Birmingham Hippodrome and Hotel du vin.

The city will also have a presence at this year’s Best of Britain and Ireland (BoBI) exhibition at the NEC on 11th and 12th March, showcasing its offer to 3,000 targeted decision makers from the UK’s tourism sector.

Birmingham Airport Hello World Branding

Birmingham Airport have redesigned their website to better highlight its ‘Hello World’ brand which launched five years ago.

Beth Gawthorpe, marketing manager at Birmingham Airport, explained responsiveness has also been key as traffic to the site from mobile devices has grown to 60 per cent since 2010.

“The previous website was not designed for mobile platforms so the trigger point to develop a new website was due to customers not having an optimum experience on their mobiles and tablets,” Gawthorpe added that the next phase of will see the development of a mobile app and wayfinding service.  “That will enable a seamless digital journey from researching and booking on the website to physically arriving and departing through the airport itself,” she said.

Icelandair Inaugural Reykjavik Flight Arrives at Birmingham Airport

Icelandair's first scheduled service between Birmingham and Reykjavik has lift off, as passengers were treated to an experience on board the new “Aurora plane”.

The “Aurora plane” is a special themed Boeing 757 that is decorated with the Northern Lights both on external livery and in internal cabin fixtures and lighting, providing a unique experience for passengers.

Birmingham is Icelandair’s 5th gateway in the UK and 39th overall. The new flights operate twice weekly, on Thursdays and Mondays, starting from today the 5th of February 2015.

Birkir Hólm Guðnason Icelandair, CEO said: “Icelandair looks forward to be offering a refreshing and valuable travel experience to and from the West Midlands. Icelandair has been flying for 70 years to the UK and we hope people from the Midlands will like the service we have to offer. Birmingham and its neighbouring cities are predicted to grow substantially and we are pleased to be taking part in and supporting that growth as of today.

“We were delighted to be able to mark the beginning of our new service from Birmingham airport by giving passengers the chance to fly on our new Aurora plane and were honoured that dignitaries such as the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, the Iceland Ambassador to the UK and the CEO of Birmingham Airport were able to join us on this special occasion.”

The new service also offers an attractive flight option to North America. Mr Guðnason explains: “By using Iceland’s geographical position midway between Europe and North America we can offer some of the fastest elapsed times from Birmingham to popular destinations such as Washington D.C. and Seattle.”

Paul Kehoe, the CEO of Birmingham Airport, added: “Icelandair’s new service from Birmingham is not only fantastic news for Midlanders wanting to spend leisure time in Reykjavik to see the northern lights or relax in hot springs, but also to travel onwards to the USA and Canada using Icelandair’s strong network of connecting flights.”

Cllr Shafique Shah, The Lord Mayor of Birmingham, said: "I am delighted to take part in today's inaugural celebrations to signify the start of flights to Reykjavik and beyond with Icelandair and Birmingham Airport. This new route not only allows people from the Midlands region to access this wonderful leisure destination but also creates more connectivity to the US and Canada and opens up opportunities for Icelandic people to visit Birmingham and the wider region."

The Birmingham service will operate with an Icelandair Boeing 757, seating 183 passengers, offering a three-cabin service, leather seats and personal in-flight entertainment system.
