Birmingham Airport - New Terminal & Pier 04/04/1984
The start of the "modern era" began at Birmingham Airport - on Wednesday 4 April 1984 the "new" terminal site opened for business - over the previous night a major opeation had taken place to relocate all the airlines, their aircraft and equipment from the Elmdon site to the new facility on the eastern side of the airfield.
By the mid 1970's Birmingham Airport was handling over a million passengers and the existing terminal on the Elmdon site was already bursting at the seems. A long planning and consultation exercise thus began to build a completely new terminal on a site on the eastern side of the airfield adjacent to the main Birmingham to London railway line and the recently completed National Exhibition Centre - NEC.

Published on 26 Nov 2017
Birmingham International Airport now known as Birmingham Airport was also formerly known as Elmdon Airport. The modern era began in 1984 for Birmingham International Airport.
On 30 May 1984 Her Majesty The Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the new terminal which is located on the east side of the runway adjacent to the Birmingham Airport (International) railway station and the National Exhibition Centre, able to handle three million passengers a year. It included a Maglev Airport Rapid Transit system, running between the airport and Birmingham International railway station on a 600-metre (1,969 ft) track. The original Art Deco 1939 terminal and control tower are still visible and are in use as aviation related offices, near hangars to the west of the runway.

Diana, Princess of Wales attends the International Spring Fair - 1983
On 8th April 1983 Diana, Princess of Wales attended the International Spring Fair at the Birmingham National Exhibition Centre (NEC). She left the event by boarding upon the Queen's Flight of a jet type called Hawker Siddeley Andover which had taken off from Birmingham Airport BHX (Elmdon Airport EGBB). There are three Andovers which were normally used for the Queens Flight and the registrations are as follows: XS789, XS790, and XS793. I'm not sure which registered aircraft was used at Birmingham on 8th April 1983. The aircraft registered XS790 and XS793 are believed to be scrapped now.

First Concorde visit to BHX 16/09/1980

First Concorde visit to BHX drew a crowd. She seems so modern next to the cars of the day. Sadly lost 20 years later. The brown building on left was a cafe for spotters. As kids we played football in this area - best of both worlds!
