Wake vortex variety
The wake is the stream of turbulent air behind a plane, and everything on the plane in contact with the outside air contributes to it.
This video shows some of the components of the wake which are made impressively visible when atmospheric or other conditions are just right.
These include the following vortices: the big powerful ones which swirl off the wingtip areas; the narrow 'tubes' of condensed water which spin off the flap outer edges; the spirals coming off the propeller tips.

To mark the retirement of the A300 from commercial service, and to celebrate the impact the A300 had made on the airline over the previous 24 years during which the fleet had accumulated over 300,000 flying hours and had carried over twenty million passengers. Monarch’s last ever passenger carrying A300 service, flight MON300, was scheduled to depart at 14:40 and was booked to carry a full load of 347 enthusiasts, guests and senior staff from the airline. Enthusiasts came not only from the UK, but also from across Europe and even from the USA to fly the A300 one last time. The crew selected for the last flight were all very experienced. By early 2014, all of Monarch’s A300 type rated first officers had moved on to other fleets, so for the final few weeks Monarch’s A300 flights were operated by two captains. Monarch Chief Pilot Captain Martin Pound was in charge of the last flight. Captain Pound said “I was the first [A300] project pilot appointed in 1989. I was involved the in the delivery of the aircraft and the first commercial flight from London Gatwick to Toulouse in 1990. I flew the first flight and now I am flying the last. I am very proud, but at the same time very sad.” On the last flight, Captain Pound was assisted by Captain Stewart Smith, another very experienced A300 pilot. Both Captain Pound and Captain Smith were looking forward to going on Airbus A320-family training courses after G-OJMR had been retired, but they also agreed that they had enjoyed their many years of flying the A300. Captain Smith said “It’s a pilot’s aeroplane, a pleasure to fly by hand rather than an aeroplane flown primarily by computers.” In addition to the wealth experience on the flight deck, the passengers in the cabin were looked after by a cadre of cabin crew who were also extremely familiar with the A300 – between them they had accumulated almost 208 years of flying during their careers.

Monarch A300 G-OJMR last Commercial Flight arriving at BHX
Today 13/04/14 Monarch airlines operated the last flight of there Airbus A300 from Gatwick to Birmingham via a low fly pass of a 1000ft over Manchester Airport. This aircraft was delivered to Monarch in May 1991.
The A300 aircraft type has been in service with the airline since 1990, and has carried more than 20 million holiday makers while in Monarch colours. The final A300 airframe in the fleet, G-OJMR has been retired on Sunday, 13th April 2014, having served the airline for 23 years after being delivered new 1991. In a fitting end to this aircraft’s service, the final flight was piloted by the Chief Pilot of Monarch Airlines, Martin Pound. Martin has served Monarch for over 36 years and in 1991, was the pilot charged with flying the first A300 into service.
Monarch’s A300s are the final passenger-carrying examples in service with a European airline, and with its impending retirement from service, the passenger variant of Airbus’ first entry in to the commercial airliner market, will become a very rare sight in European skies.

FINAL FLIGHT Monarch Airbus A300 G-OJMR Approach + Landing at BHX
In 2013, Monarch Airlines announced that they were to retire the last of their Airbus A300-600R aircraft after many years service. Later in the year, they announced an enthusiast flight from London Gatwick to Birmingham, to commemorate the retirement of the type from the Monarch fleet. Closer to the date, a flypast was also announced at Manchester as part of the flight.
This video sees us on board G-OJMR (the final Airbus A300 in the Monarch Airlines fleet) as we approach Runway 33 at Birmingham Airport, our final destination. Loud applause fills the cabin several times, and an emotional speech from the lead Cabin Crew member tops off a very special occasion.

Prime Minister David Cameron Visits Birmingham Airport

Prime Minister David Cameron Visits Birmingham Airport
Prime Minister Welcomes The Announcement of 8000 Jobs at Birmingham Airport
David Cameron has welcomed the announcement that 8,000 jobs will be created in the Midlands as Birmingham Airport expands to cope with increased demand from around the globe.
On a visit to the airport, which is just weeks away from having its runway extended, the Prime Minister heard that 4,000 jobs would be created at the Airport and a further 4,000 across the supply chain by 2020.
Prime Minister David Cameron said: "The announcement of 8,000 jobs from Birmingham Airport is more great news in a week where we are cutting tax for 26million hard-working people and taking over 3million people out of income tax altogether. These are two significant announcements which will help give people financial security for the future."
The Prime Minister welcomed the news after witnessing the final lights being fitted on the runway extension by engineering apprentices, who have gained full-time employment as a direct result of the infrastructure project.
As a sign of confidence in the expanded airport, last month saw an announcement that flights between Beijing and Birmingham, operated by China Southern Airlines, will begin this summer.
They will be the first direct charter flights from China to Britain and the first ever direct flights from China to a British airport outside of London.
Paul Kehoe, Birmingham Airport's CEO, added: "Receiving this endorsement from the Prime Minister as our runway extension nears completion is fantastic for everyone involved in the project. Birmingham is recognised as an airport that is delivering real growth and supporting thousands of new jobs.
"The main driver for this growth is the runway extension. By 2020, based on today's demand, Birmingham Airport is forecast to handle 15 million passengers a year, an increase of six million. This passenger growth will generate an additional 4,000 jobs on-site and a further 4,000 in the immediate supply chain."
During the visit, Mr Cameron also met with local business leaders from across the region, who welcome greater connectivity from their local airport.
The longer runway will allow aircraft to fly to destinations further away and support more direct long-haul flights to emerging economies currently out of reach, such as Brazil and China, as well as tourist hotspots like the West Coast of the USA.
The runway expansion is just one part of a long-term investment programme, worth over £300 million at the airport. The earlier stages have already delivered a new combined terminal, a new maintenance hangar for larger aircraft and a state-of-the-art air traffic control tower.
The airport development has been funded through private sector investment, and will support the airport's long term ambition of quadrupling the annual number of passengers to 36 million.
